Alba Fhathast – Meaning

GAELICPHONETICTRANSLATION

So that’s what Alba Fhathast literally means translated to English. It has a slightly deeper significance though, not least because it is the motto on my father’s coat of arms. The phrase can be interpreted in several ways, perhaps most obviously as a cry to recognize Scotland as its own independent entity.

For this site I am taking a slightly broader interpretation. Scotland has been around for a very, very long time. Evidence of villages dates back 6,000 years and the beginnings of Alba as a single political entity are around the 9th and 10th centuries. So hundreds of years of history and while very different now, Scottish culture continues to this day.

So, for this site I am posting about Scotland of the Past, Present and Future… Alba Fhathast.
